Vancouver Island is situated in the southwestern tip of British Columbia, some thirty-five kilometers from the mainland shoreline. The majority of the population lies along the eastern coast, in cities, towns and villages on sheltered bays and river-mouths, surrounded by vast forests and rugged mountains, watered by ocean showers and dried by salt-tinged winds that scour the sandy beaches.
